These reactions can be caused by over-stressed and hypersensitive immune systems. This is believed to begin at the intestines.Foreign bodies in the form of food proteins enter through damaged intestinal walls and these foreign proteins (antigens) trigger the immune system to form antibodies. For food reactions, most conventional physicians only believe in the Type l reactions. Consequently, the same goes for insurance coverage. While only 5% of the population is affected by this Type l reaction, it is estimated that more than 40% of the population that have more delayed reactions (including theType ll and Type lll reactions). Thismeans the production of antibodies occurs hours or days after the food is consumed. The delay in symptoms, a food sensitivity, makes it difficult to determine which foods may be the trigger.

Some reactions to food do not include an IgG or IGE mediated immune response, they are referred to as food intolerances. These can arise from chemicals or additives in food with MSG. preservatives, or food coloring, but are most often due to enzyme deficiencies. A common example would be lactose intolerance in individuals who lack the enzyme lactase and cannot digest lactose milk sugar, leading to bloating and diarrhea upon eating dairy products.

At DNA Associates, Dr. Faria believes that allergy testing should evaluate all Type l, Type ll, Type lll, and Type lV reactions.

  • For Type l– Food, Airborne, or Environmental reactions which are covered by insurance, she recommends blood testing with LabCorp or Quest.
  • For Type ll and Type lll- Food sensitivity reactions, she recommends blood testing with KBMO or SALVEO FoodSense which is not covered by insurance, but it is reasonably priced and may be covered by FHA.
  • For Type lV- Chemical sensitivity, she recommends in office patch testing, where many chemicals are saturated on small disks, taped on to the skin of the back for 48 hours. The readings are done after 48 hours and 96 hours. Patch testing for chemicals is usually covered by insurances.
